PSU Women's Basketball routs Johnson and Wales

The PSU Women's Basketball team opened up their season with a 72-51 stomping over Johnson and Wales on the road at Harborside Recreation Center on Sunday, November 15.PSU senior Laura Kent was a work horse, scoring 25 points and 15 rebounds while sophomore Alicia Doucet contributed nicely with 23 points and nine rebounds. Johnson and Wales senior Jennifer Moxley led the way for the Wildcats by scoring 14 points and first year student Alexia Ramirez was a monster in the paint by blocking as she gobbled up 13 rebounds and blocked five shots. This is third straight year PSU has opened up their season with a victory while Johnson and Wales falls to an 0-1 record. It was an impressive wire-to-wire effort by PSU as they took an eleven point lead into halftime and never looked back. PSU would outscore Johnson and Wales in the second half by 10 points. The closest Johnson and Wales would get in the second half was when they cut PSU's lead to nine points with roughly thirteen minutes to play. PSU head coach Lauren Lavigne stated that her game plan for the was "Our game plan was to utilize our size and exploit them with our interior game," said Lavigne, "We knew they were going to play zone the majority of the game so we worked on that a lot heading into the game." PSU would execute this game plan as evidence by Kent's 25 points and 15 rebounds. There was many things to be happy about if your coach Lavigne, but what impressed her most was her team's remaining focused through some early adversity "What impressed me the most was how the team responded to early foul trouble to many of our starters; we lost Krystin Corliss early to an injury and we struggled in the 1st half at the free throw line," stated Lavigne, "They didn't panic and they stuck to the game plan and allowed our system to carry them through."Although, like most coaches, Lavigne see's room for improvement in some areas of her teams game, "We need to develop a little more of a threat from the perimeter, and now make some adjustments on our defense."PSU will move on to play Rivier College in the Maine Maritime Tournament in Castine, Maine on Friday, November 20 at 6:00pm. After PSU finishes up with the Maine Maritime tournament, to will move on to their home opener on Tuesday, November 24 when they play Castleton College at 5:30pm. Johnson and Wales will look to get on the board with a victory when they travel to Rhode Island to take Salve Regina on Thursday, November 19.
