Fake Bassist and Phony Drummers

Songs such as The Monkees' "Daydream Believer" or the famous words "this one goes up to eleven" as said by Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap are certain to go down in history. One could say that these two bands are real "characters," but no, really, they are. These two bands are a sampling of the finest fake bands of all time. Sure, anyone would love to believe that the Muppet band, Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem, had real, unscripted jam sessions with famous musical artists such as John Denver and Alice Cooper. Unfortunately, this isn't so, but this doesn't make them any less enjoyable. Here is a list of some of the most well-known fake bands.

1.Spinal Tap: This fake band was thrust into the world at the release of the mockumentary "This is Spinal Tap." Ironically iconic and popular, the mockumentary was released in the 1980's and the band still well known today.

2.The Monkees: This quartet is possibly as close to real as fake bands can get. After The Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" was a big success, four similarly mop-topped actors were hired to play a part in the famous TV show. The band prerecorded songs and performed on the show with unplugged instruments. Eventually, The Monkees began writing their own songs and fought for band rights and won. The band had six albums with the original lineup and only two seasons of the actual show. The band also went on to produce a full-length movie and many of their hits such as "I'm a Believer" have been covered and are still played on the radio today.

3.Stillwater: Stillwater is the perfect mix of popular 70's musicians such as Led Zeppelin and The Allman Brothers. The band was created as a mid-level band in the midst of rising to stardom in the early 70's for Cameron Crowe's film, "Almost Famous." Crowe based the characters, Jason Lee and Billy Crudup, off of real life experiences he had as a young writer for Rolling Stone.

4.Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem: This band may only consist of a few of our favorite Muppets, but they knew how to rock. Between having Animal on drums and real life guests such as Alice Cooper (Dr. Teeth) hit it big with a few songs. One of their most popular songs is "Mahna Mahna."

5.Josie and The Pussycats: It began as a comic in 1958 and evolved to 1960's comic series with a "good natured" Josie and her friends. The comic series wasn't so popular and fizzled out. In 1970 the comic was revived and turned into a TV show where Josie and the Pussycats became that we know them as today. Josie became the leader of a teen band, Melody was revived with a ditsy charm and Pepper became Valerie the 'cool' bassist. The trio cut an album with six singles and it doesn't end there. In 2001 a full-length movie with the same characters and new actors was introduced to younger generations.
