Field Hockey upended by Western Connecticut.

The Plymouth State Women's Field Hockey team fell to Western Connecticut State University by a score of 2-1 at Westside Athletic Complex in Western Connecticut.

The Colonials earned its first win in the Little East Conference by upending PSU.  WCSU scored a goal in the second half that broke a 1-1 tie in an exciting LEC matchup. PSU fell to 3-3 overall on the season with a 2-1 conference record, while WCSU improved to 2-6 overall with a 1-1 conference

record. WCSU struck first with a goal from Melissa Berardi, who scored on an assist by Kate McKartney.  PSU notched the score at a 1-1 tie when Sarah Smith scored on an unassisted goal with five seconds remaining in the first half.

WCSU seemed to control the pace of the action in the first half with its stingy defense. WCSU scored the eventual game-winning goal when Meredith Stuart put a one past PSU first year student Elyse Sedgley for her third goal of the year on an assist by Samantha Marolda. The assist by Marolda was a well-executed offensive corner that allowed Stuart to score.

Although PSU was only able to muster one offensive goal, it was able to put pressure on WCSU goalie Christina Natale with various scoring opportunities in the second half. Natale ended up posting nine saves for WCSU while PSU goalie Elyse Sedgley also posted nine saves. PSU coach Bonnie Lord attributed poorly executed offensive corners as one reason for not defeating WCSU, "We did not execute our offense corners, we just had a bad day is what it comes down to," said Lord. PSU will open up a three game home stand starting Oct. 1 against Framingham State at Arnold Field, while WCSU will move on to play Eastern Connecticut at home.

Framingham State has a record of 4-1 and will no doubt be a test for PSU. Framingham State has posted wins over Anna Maria, Salve Regina, Southern Maine and Gordon College; while its only loss has been to Keene State College. Framingham State is led by sophomore Kristen Sacco who leads the team with six goals on the season. Framingham State has used a rotation of two different goalies through its first five games. That rotation consists of sophomore Allesha Kenyon, and junior Stephanie Bourgeois.

Although Kenyon has started in three of the first five games, Bourgeois has been solid with 17 saves in her two starts.  Kenyon, in her three starts, has given up only two goals with

17 saves.  Framingham states defense has also been stingy all year long.  The only blunder they have had all year thus far has been the four-goal game against Keene State.  Outside of the Keene State game, Framingham's defense has only given up four goals in its other four games.

On the season, including the Keene State game, Framingham's defense has given up an average of 1.4 goals a game.  PSU's offense on the other hand has averaged nearly three goals a game this year.  The winner of this game will most likely be the winner of the battle between Framingham's defense against PSU's offense.
