Plymouth women's soccer defeated by West Conn.
The Plymouth State Women's Soccer team lost a tough match against Western Connecticut by a score of 6-1 at Panther Field on Sat., Oct. 11th.
The Panthers played the two-time LEC champs tough in the early goings of the game. WestConn. was finally able to put one on the board halfway through the first half with a goal by Junior Kelli Veras. The Colonials would add one more goal before halftime with the goal coming from senior Victoria Capozziello.
PSU coach Gene Smith was pleased with his teams performance against the Colonials in the first half, "For most of the first half I think we were able to move the ball quite well against West Conn.," said Smith, "They are a nationally ranked opponent and I think we played well against them before giving up the first goal. We created a good share of offensive opportunities and we were almost able to put one in early."
WCSU would add to their lead in the second half led as sophomore Lauren Matthews who scored a goal and added an assist. The goal by Matthews was her eighth of the season which is the most by any Colonial this season.
WCSU would add four more goals in the second half on their way to their third straight win. Although coach Smith was pleased with the performance from his team in the first half, he see's room for improvement. "As a team we still not making quality decisions throughout the game. We need to take better care of the ball in the midfield and limit mistakes in our defensive area of the field," said Smith "We tend to make careless passes that turn into goals for opponents. We need to do a better job staying composed and finding quality passes."
PSU junior Gianna Minervini scored the only goal of the afternoon for the Panthers coming in the final minutes of the game. The goal by Minervini was her second goal of the season.
With the loss, PSU fell to 3-5-3 on the season while they remain winless in the Little East Conference with a record of 0-3-1. The two time defending LEC champs Western Connecticut Colonials improved to 7-3 overall with a 3-0 conference record.
PSU will move on to play Rhode Island College on Sat., Oct. 18 after they play a road game against Castelton on Wed., Oct. 15. Castleton has a record of 8-6 while RIC has a record of 1-12-1. Western Connecticut will move on to play home to Scranton on Thurs., Oct. 16.
