Tuition Increase Takes Effect

In January 2012, the University System of New Hampshire (USNH) Board of Trustees voted on a measure that increased student tuitions at the University of New Hampshire, Granite State College, Keene State College, and Plymouth State University, which took effect in September, 2012. This has led to a nearly six percent cost of attendance increase for in-state students, and a two percent increase for out of state students.

Based on those numbers, the price of tuition has gone up by $1,192 for in state students, and $632 for out of state students. Emily Spring, a sophomore from Pembroke NH, is not happy with the situation. "Some students might find it more financially appealing to go to out of state schools."

The increase, which had been voted on in January, was implemented due to funding cuts. "It'slargely attributable to the fact that last year the University System of New Hampshire lost $48.4 million of its $100 million in funding from the State of New Hampshire," said Linda Dauer, PSU Associate Vice President for Finance and Administration.

With prices for college increasing throughout the United States, it seems like a sign of the times. However, compared to other states, New Hampshire ranks last in the nation for what assistance it receives from state funding.

There are measures being put in place by the administration to attempt to ease the hurt being felt by students. "We increased the financial aid budget for need-based university grants by $1.5 million over the past two years to assist with student access and affordability," said Dauer. "We feel very strongly about keeping the cost of education as low as possible and are very concerned about debt loads carried by students."

She continued saying that the University "is committed to maintaining quality academic programs for its students and continues striving to increase efficiencies in all areas across campus."

The University is also trying to save money in other ways, such as using more energy efficient products, more competitive bidding procedures for projects, and using more fuel efficient vehicles.

Until the cost of college stops rising, students will still have to pay the price. What can a student do to try to stem the financial burden? It is recommended that students file for financial aid before deadlines, and if a student can, use the TMS Payment Plan. Dauer had this recommendation for students."One of the best things that you can do to control cost for yourself is aim to graduate in four years or less.  Make sure that you are taking enough credits each semester to ensure that you can graduate on time."
