PSU Football Shutout against Salve Regina
Middletown, R.I.- Salve Regina University limited the Panthers to just 131 yards of total offense en route to a 31-0 victory, and a fourth straight loss for Plymouth State, in NEFC action from Gaudet Field.
It was a difficult all-around day for the underdog Panthers, who could only muster three yards of total offense in the second half. The Seahawk's defense set the tone early and often, led by senior Connor Kelly who had 8 tackles on the afternoon, including 2.5 sacks. Greg Sweeny also had a standout game, finishing with six tackles, two sacks, and an interception. Maxwell Shubert and Phil Terio each had an interception for Salve.
The Plymouth offense was again led by senior workhorse back Andrew Foglia who had a game high 68 yards rushing. On defense, Senior Louis Montegari had a game-high tying eight tackles, while freshman Josh Puccio chipped in with four tackles and an interception.
PSU's best chance came midway through the second quarter. With the Panthers in the midst of a 14-play, 58 yard drive that took up nearly eight minutes, Seahawk sophomore Frank Musco tipped a pass that was intercepted by Terio, and returned 52 yards into Plymouth territory.
Salve Regina's number for clinching the division falls to one game as the Seahawk's improved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in division play. Salve looks to clinch the division next Saturday when they host Nichols College. Plymouth State fell to 2-7 on the season and 1-5 in Boyd Division play. The Panthers will celebrate their senior day next Saturday at noon when they play host to Curry College.
