Plymouth State University students, organizations and community members joined forces and marched through town on Oct., 27 to speak out against violence. The collaboration of Voices Against Violence, The S.A.G.E. center, University Police and the Wellness Center held The March Against Violence to address all forms of violence worldwide and to offer their support against sexual and domestic violence.

The March did not go unnoticed as it travelled down Main St. and up Highland lead with a large sign that read "We March Against Violence." The band of dedicated volunteers certainly called attention to the major problem as part of the "I Got Your Back," campaign, which addresses what is appropriate in regards to sex and communication as well as other issues of similar nature.

"A lot of people who are assaulted don't know what to do so we often tell students to go to an advocate and we will help you figure out what you want to do, but if you are harmed the first thing you need to do is call the police," Coordinator of the S.A.G.E. center Delilah Smith stated.

University Police Officer Jen Frank addressed the crowd before the March stating, "If you need to report a sexual assault we will not charge you for alcohol if you have been drinking. We are more worried about your safety and I will put that in writing."

Officer Frank also addressed the group with information on the Circle of 6 free app for Smartphones that can help prevent sexual violence. Circle of 6 allows users to choose six people who can be easily contacted when in need of assistance in a dangerous situation. Pre-written text messages such as, "I need help getting home safely," can be sent with the use of GPS on Google Maps to tell your circle of your location.

Voices Against Violence is dedicated to breaking the cycle of violence and committed to supporting all victims of domestic and sexual violence with free and confidential services. The organization's 24-hour crisis line (603-536-1659) is available for victims to speak with an advocate in a desperate situation or for general questions.

The S.A.G.E. center, located in Health Services, also has similar commitments in promoting a safe and supportive environment for women and LGBT students. The organization coordinates risk reduction programs and services for victims and survivors with education that addresses sex, gender and race.

The March Against Violence not only spread awareness of the violence but also reached out to victims in need of their support and advocacy to feel safe on campus.
