PSU Loses a Legend
Douglas C. Wiseman (2/28/35 – 9/26/11)
Biddeford, Maine-- On September 26th, 2011, at Southern Maine Medical Center, former Plymouth State University Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award Winner and Athletic Hall of Famer, Douglas C. Wiseman passed away. He was 76.
Wiseman served in the United States Army as a paratrooper until 1956, following his high school graduation from Alvirne High (NH). He went on to attend Plymouth Teacher's College for his bachelor's and master's degrees in education. He received his doctorate of education from Indiana University in 1970 and went on to teach at public schools in New Hampshire and Michigan before joining Plymouth State full time.
The remainder of Wiseman's career and life were full of honors, accomplishments and important duties. His mark in life is evident all throughout the University. He initially joined the faculty of Plymouth State College in 1964, where he served as Chair, Professor and Director of Athletics in the Department of Health and Physical Education. Wiseman was also influential in beginning the wrestling program at PSU and was inducted into the Plymouth State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995 for his roles as both a coach and administrator.
After retiring, Doug Wiseman and his wife, Donna, moved first to Merry Point, VA, and finally to Gold Canyon, AZ, where Wiseman spent the remainder of his years. He leaves behind his wife, Donna Mae Wiseman, as well as six children (three step-children) and nine grandchildren.
