Plymouth State’s winter sports are well underway as both men’s and women’s indoor track have their teams set and look to compete in their first meet this coming Saturday at UMass Boston at the Reggie Lewis Center. The indoor track and field teams are a new addition to Plymouth State’s athletic program this year as the campus is buzzing with excitement to see what the athletes can do. The men’s and women’s ski teams are both beginning to train hard and are ready to start skiing as the ski areas are finally opening and making snow.
On Saturday the 21st, Plymouth State’s Men’s wrestling team took 11th place at the annual Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College. Stevens Institute of Technology placed first place with a total score of 162 points while Williams College placed second with 139 points and Springfield College tallied 127 points to claim the third place position. PSU totaled 42 points, as the team placed 11th in the event. Plymouth’s top finishers were freshman Joey Aumann (Hopatcong, N.J.) who placed sixth in his weight class at 125 and Junior Clay Callahan (Milford, C.T.) who also placed sixth weighing in at 165. PSU’s wrestling team returns to the mat this coming Saturday at the University of Southern Maine and at the annual Ted Reese Invitational.
The women’s swimming and diving team of Plymouth split a tri-meet at Western New England University on the 21st as they beat the Golden Bears of Western New England 175-69 but fell to Eastern Connecticut State University 129-120. The women of PSU won both relay races and three other individual races in the meet but fell to Eastern Connecticut State in the other nine individual events. The top performer for PSU was freshman Julia Mazza (Belchertown, M.A.) who captured two individual first-place finishes along with being on the two winning relay teams. Mazza won the 50-yard butterfly in just 29.03 seconds and won in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:30.47. The women of PSU also placed second in nine of the races with lead by junior Katia Wyman (Portsmouth, N.H.) in the 500 free 6:08.63 and 1000 free 12:31.84 followed by sophomore Julia Donahue (Hampstead, N.H.) in the 50-yard free 28.10 seconds; freshman Erin Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) in the 50 backstroke 31.77 and 200 back 2:27.73; freshmen Deanne DeGrazia (Westport, M.A.) in the 200 free 2:10.77 and the 100 free 1:00.96; and lastly, sophomore Addie Schumaker (Haymarket, Va.) in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:32.27. This Friday the 4th, the lady Panthers are traveling to Rhode Island College for a dual meet.
