A strong outing for the first time outside gave head coach Clay Jenkins’ his first win as Plymouth’s head coach, as they split with Becker College last Sunday afternoon. Graduate student Cody Gilchrist (Tyngsboro, NH) picked up the first win for the pitching staff, throwing all seven in game one. Senior Matti Doxter (Somersworth, NH) got the no-decision in game two, getting through five innings while striking out 11.
Plymouth put up three runs in the first inning on a two-bagger from Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) and an RBI triple off the bat of Josh Goulet (Nashua, NH).
Despite a home run given up by Gilchrist in the second, Plymouth never trailed. Through the next four innings, Jake Broom (New London, NH) added a pair of RBI’s, and newcomer James Riley-Garnett (Newport, R.I.) hit back-to-back dingers in the third and fifth. Plymouth would pull away with the win in game one, 9-2.
In the back end of the double header, it was the Hawks turn, but they needed eight innings to get the job done. The Panthers saw Matti Doxter on the mound, who threw nearly a no-hitter through the fifth inning. The towering senior was on a pitch count, so after five strong innings, he was replaced by newcomer Taylor Doyle (Peterborough, NH). Doyle pitched just one inning, giving up two runs on a pair of base hits.
Plymouth freshman David Sampson (Bellingham, Mass.) came on in relief for Doyle, and threw two innings, giving up three hits and a pair of walks. The winning run came in the bottom of the eighth, when a ground ball got through the right side and scored the runner from second.
Plymouth scored on a pair of balls that got past the catcher, along with a pair of RBI’s from Riley-Garnett and Goulet, both new faces for the green-and-white. The Panthers, now at 1-1, take a long bus ride down to sunny Fort Myers during spring break. The team takes on Bethel (Minn.) in their first double header, scheduled for Friday the 11th.
