Two words: work ethic. You think you have one? Think again.
Plymouth State University’s Cody Gilchrist is currently in the process of attaining his Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He graduated last year with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and as a graduate student, is in his first semester as a Community Advisor in the student apartments. When he’s not studying or working, he’s pitching for Plymouth’s baseball team.
The Tyngsboro, Massachusetts native was named one of three captains for the 2016 season, and with his current resume, it’s easy to see why. “This year Cody is at his best; physically and mentally,” said head coach Clay Jenkins. “As a teammate he motivates players around him to get better, and he's someone I can rely on to run the pitching staff when I am not around.”
So far, Gilchrist sports a 2-2 record, but don’t let the early season statistics fool you. In the two games Gilchrist has won, he’s only given up nine hits through the 14 combined innings. His most recent win came against nationally-ranked Western New England, where the upperclassmen threw a complete game five-hitter, allowing just one run and fanning six. He’s tossed 25 innings total, surrendering just 10 walks in his five appearances on the mound. “When he's on the mound and I'm calling pitches, it's very similar to playing a video game,” said Jenkins.
It’s hard to come by someone as enthusiastic about baseball as Gilchrist. As a student-athlete, not many people can say they have more on their plate than he does. This week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Cody Gilchrist for this week’s installment of 10 Seconds.
When did you first start playing baseball?
I started playing baseball at five years old.
Why Plymouth State?
Plymouth State provided me a place to live, learn and grow. I enjoy skiing, baseball and social activities and Plymouth State offered all three.
What's your biggest superstition?
I never step on the foul lines on a baseball field. To me it is disrespectful to do so, and brings bad luck.
Who is your biggest role model?
My mom. Her work ethic and perseverance are off the charts!

What is your pre-game ritual?
I always listen to music before a start and relax in the dugout. About a half hour before the start of the game I will begin to stretch and throw.
What's your go-to pitch?
My change-up.
How did it feel to be named one of this year's captains?
It was a proud moment to be named one of this year’s captains. Juice [Jarek Krajewski], Dave [Hall] and I take it very seriously and try to be leaders for the team every day on and off the field. I have to give credit to captains from years past (Paul Reny, Tucker Regan, and Rob Madonna just to name a few) who were great role models and set the example for us.
Favorite moment at Plymouth State?
Spring Fling my junior year. It was a great day with friends that I will never forget.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years I see myself working as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in either NH or MA and working towards opening my own private practice involving psychotherapy, mindfulness, and life-coaching.
What can you take away from college athletics?
College baseball has taught me how to manage my time, work towards a goal and persevere through hard times. College baseball has taught me how to fail, but also how to win. Being on a team for four years taught me to work with others and has helped shape me into the person I am today.
