It was not a good weekend for the men’s soccer team. The Panthers came into this weekend’s double header at 2-1-1, but came up short falling to UMass Boston on Saturday and then to Tufts on Sunday.
On Saturday, Plymouth hosted undefeated and nationally ranked UMass Boston (5-0-0). Despite the stronger opponent, the Panthers put up a fight and showed that they could run with a strong Beacon team. The game started with UMass sophomore midfielder, Mohamed Kenawy, scoring in the fourth minute, his first of three goals on the day. That was the only goal for both sides up until the 67th minute, when UMass senior midfielder Klismam Mendes (Fogo, Cape Verde), netted his first of the year. In the 70th minute Kenawy, scored his second and third goal of the game almost 30 seconds within each other, pushing the Beacon's lead to 4-0. Junior forward Matt Coakley (Medway, Mass) scored the final goal in the 89th minute, secur- ing the game for the Beacons 5-0. Freshman goalkeeper Omar CastroDreher (Woonsocket, RI) had three saves and recorded his fifth shutout of the year for the Beacons, while Plymouth goalkeeper Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) stopped six shots out of ten total. UMass rises to 6-0-0.
On Sunday, the Panthers visited the Jumbos of Tufts University (1-2-1) at Bello Field in Medford, Mass. The scoring started in the 50th minute of the second half as Tufts senior forward, Gaston Becherano (Hollywood, Fla), netted his fourth and fifth goals of the year. Later in the 89th minute, freshman midfielder Brett Rojas (Madison, N.J.) scored his first goal of the year pushing the lead to 3-0 where it would stay. Lindberg had solid day in goal for Plymouth recording 11 saves out of 14 shots, but that wasn't enough as Plymouth was shutout for the second straight time. Tufts moves up to a 2-2-1 record.
Plymouth fell to 2-3-1 over the weekend. Their next match is away against Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, September 24th at 1pm.
