The Plymouth State Panthers claimed a victory on the road against UMass Dartmouth this weekend, extending their unbeaten streak (6-0-1) to seven games. The PSU offense was on fire as soon as they hit the ice, scoring three goals in the first period and elevating the Panthers to an early lead, which they maintained for the rest of the game. Sophomore Ry an Stevens (Colleyville, TX) opened the scoring, netting his 15th goal of the season 33 seconds into the period. Senior Baxter Strachan (Sioux City, Iowa) and freshman Victor Bergstrom (Angelholm, Sweden) tacked onto the Panther lead later in the period, maneuvering the puck past the UMD goalie at 14:06 and 19:52, respectively.
The Corsairs attempted to spark a comeback in the second period, outshooting the Panthers 21-15, but only connected with the back of the net twice. Each of UMD’s goals were answered quickly by Senior Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Illinois), who netted one at 3:13, and classmate Dan Dupell (Collegeville, PA), who slapped one in at 12:25.
As the third period opened, the Panther offense proved they weren’t quite finished yet. In the opening minute, sophomore Quinn Carroll (Amherst, NH) scored PSU’s sixth and final goal. The Corsairs answered with one last goal at 19:55, but it wasn’t enough. The Panthers toppled UMD 6-3. Freshman Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Quebec) took the “W” in goal for Plymouth, chalking up 40 saves.
The Panthers’ win over UMass Dartmouth marks the seventh consecutive match-up between the two teams in which PSU has claimed victory, and also extends their current unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1). PSU leads the MASCAC with an overall record of 11-1-1. The Panthers return to the ice on Thursday Feb. 9th to host Salem State in a conference matchup at 6pm in Hanaway Rink and will travel to Framingham State to take on the Rams on Saturday Feb. 11.
