Men’s Lacrosse Falls to UNE in Season Opener

On Sunday March 5, the Plymouth Men's lacrosse team traveled to play University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. Senior Mac Tetreault (New Durham, N.H.) scored three goals, while fellow Senior classmate Colin Claflin (Pembroke, Mass.) scored two of his own. Plymouth and UNE both picked up 38 ground balls, with Claflin and senior Adam Haversat (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) picking up eight ground balls each for the Panthers. Plymouth won more faceoffs against UNE 15-14.

The University of New England came out strong scoring their first goal less than two minutes into the first quarter. Although the Panthers scored a goal of their own, UNE scored three more, ending the first quarter 4-1. In the second, UNE held them and progressed another six points for both the second and third quarter while Plymouth state scored only four. In the fourth quarter Plymouth tried to rally back by scoring another four goals but could not catch UNE, who tallied another four of their own making the final 20-9.

“We need to improve our mind-set,” said senior Tyler Hawley (Jericho, VT). ”We showed up expecting to win and we didn’t play that way. We can show up and work for the little things. Every ground ball, communication on defense and better one on one. Offensively we need more shots on goal and longer possession time.”

When asked what the team could take away from UNE and from this week’s practices Hawley commented, “We’re going into it with a new desire. We just didn’t have it last time. We’ve been having great practices since then and if we can play like that in the game like we normally play in practice we will go out their hungry.”

Many teams start out their season with both whole team and individual goals that they try and complete by the end of the season. The Plymouth lacrosse team’s goal is to win the LEC championship for the 2017 season.
