Plymouth State football proved why they are ranked a top-10 DIII football program across New England, as they allowed just one touchdown en route to a 17-7 victory on Currier Field Saturday afternoon. Bridgewater State (1-5 overall, 1-3 MASCAC) couldn’t stop junior running back Mitch Banuskevitch (Milford, N.H.) on the ground or through the air, as he totaled 208 total yards in the win.
Plymouth remains in second atop the MASCAC (5-1, 3-0) with the victory.
Bridgewater State’s Stephano D’Emilia (Bridgewater, MA) threw for 178 yards on 22-43 completions in the loss.
Plymouth started off the scoring in their first drive of the afternoon. On a drive that saw over 60 yards from Banuskevitch, the junior found the end zone on a 12-yard reception from junior quarterback Zack Edwards (Brookfield, MA). The best offensive drive of the day, Plymouth took the 7-0 lead on 11 plays and 73 yards.
After Bridgewater State’s offense stalled early, it didn’t take them long to respond. On a drive that saw 12 plays and 56 yards, a fumble recovery in the end zone after a 1-yard rush by Alex McLaughlin (Littleton, MA) evened the score 7-7 .
After ending the half in a tie, Plymouth’s defense locked down. In a consistent effort to force the Bears to punt, junior Sean Peet (Glen Cove, N.Y.) broke through the line and got his hands on a punt. 20 yards down the field, sophomore Prince Gbaley (Manchester, N.H.) found the ball in his hands, and ran in the score uncontested to double the Panther lead.
Plymouth made it a two-score game in the fourth quarter, after driving through six plays and 47 yards. Freshman kicker Jeremy Martin (Charlton, MA) chipped a 25-yard field goal through the uprights, and Plymouth locked down defensively to seal the game.
Despite an Edwards fumble that gave the Bears tremendous real estate, Plymouth bore down just outside the red zone. After getting inside the Panther 25, D’Emilia’s pass outside the end zone was picked off by Gbaley; his second of the game. Plymouth ran the clock out with four minutes left, and remained undefeated in conference play.
Bridgewater State’s Alex McLaughlin had a career day, rushing for his 3,000th yard as a Bear. The senior finished with 46 yards on 19 carries. He is the third running back in Bridgewater history to reach the milestone.
Jack Lavanchy’s (Walpole, MA) ten catches, moved him into sixth place on the Bears’ all-time receptions list. Lavanchy has 91 receptions in just two seasons with the Bears.
Edwards finished the afternoon going 11-21 with 111 yards. Gbaley’s two interceptions gave Plymouth their only defensive turnovers of the day.
Plymouth returns home on the 14th, as they square off with Framingham State in a battle of unbeaten teams in MASCAC play. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
