Senior Katie Silegy (Keene, N.H.) scored two goals in the first 20 minutes to lead Keene State College past Plymouth State University, 5-2, in Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer action at Arold Field.
Silegy and the Owls erupted for four first half goals, then held on in the second half to improve to 8-4 (3-1 LEC), while the Panthers fall to 4-5 and 0-3 in league play.
Silegy put the visitors on the board in the 19th minute with her first score off a feed from senior Tori Laires (Ludlow, MA), then added an unas- sisted goal two minutes later to give the Owls an early 2-0 lead.
Keene added goals from junior Stephanie Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) and senior Julia Pearson (Harwinton, Conn.) in the first half and carried the four-goal lead into halftime. The Owls controlled the offensive zone, outshooting PSU 12-3 in the first half.
Both teams made changes at the goalkeeper position for the second half. Senior Kali Santino (West Chesterfield, N.H.) scored for the Owls in the 56th minute to push the lead to 5-0, but the Panthers responded with additional offensive pressure.
PSU got on the board after consecutive corner kicks, with the latter leading to a goal from junior Kate Martin(Westmoreland, N.H.). Freshman Mallory Lloyd (Hartland, Vt.) was credited with the assist. The Panthers kept up the pressure, forcing freshman Abbie Terrinca (Ludlow, MA) to make multiple saves.
Sophomore Caitlin Catania (Billerica, MA) scored her third goal of the season in the 87th minute with Lloyd again being credited with the assist, but the Panthers were unable to get any closer.
PSU put up seven second half shots. Junior Leandra Nault (Goffstown, N.H.) made five saves for the Panthers in the second half after relieving freshman Molly Robinson (Millstone, N.J.).
Plymouth State will play again on Wednesday (Oct. 11) at New England College in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game. The Panthers are back at home on Saturday (Oct. 14) for Senior Day against the University of Southern Maine with game time set for 1:30 p.m.
