Women’s Soccer Nipped by UMass Boston
In a Little East Conference game this past Saturday, women’s soccer was served their second straight loss against the University of Massachusetts Boston. This will move PSU to 6-5-2 overall and 2-5 in the LEC. They only have three games left of the regular season and one more LEC match-up.
Freshman Goalie Cat Robbins (Franklin MA) stood out, blocking several shots including one from UMass early on. Just ten minutes after that, they did capitalize on a goal that was in the upper left, just over Robbins fingers. Sarah Hicks (Sutton MA) almost tied the game up after rebounding the ball from mayhem in front of the night, but her shot went too far to the right. Keegan Burch (Nashua NH) also had a chance to tie it but the ball hit off the cross bar and couldn’t be rebounded before UMass defenders cleared it. Robbins saw a series of shot towards the 80thminute of the game but was able to deflect or grab each shot. She denied UMass as much as she could but a few short minutes later, the ball was cross to the center of the six and a player was there at the right moment, kicking the ball into the opposite side of Robbins.
“I feel that I executed some plays really well, and provided my defenders with a calming presence behind them. However, there are always things to improve upon, and I can always give more. We had minimal let downs in the back throughout the day… everyone gave their best effort, but we were not able to put the ball in the back of the net… I was frustrated with the result, but I was also proud of our girls for controlling the majority of the game” Robbins had to comment on the performance done last weekend. She commented as well that weather conditions played a huge roll in this game; acting like a third team. We’ve seen a very rainy fall that isn’t cooperating with sports teams. You find the ball skipping across the wet grass and players down on themselves mentally. “We were connecting our passes well, exposing the gaps in UMass Boston’s defense, and getting chances on goal… the opportunities were there for us, but we didn’t capitalize on them.”
The panther’s chances at playoffs for the LEC are now out of their hands. Depending on teams that have semi secure spots and how they do for the rest of the season, will decide if PSU will make an appearance.
Plymouth will host their final home game this Saturday and recognize their seniors. This match-up against Nichols is set for a 2:30 p.m. start time.
