The Women’s High Powered Offense Pushes Past New England
The women’s team played at home against the New England College Pilgrims this past Saturday. Plymouth was hungry for a win as they entered the game 1-3-1 and on a two-game winless streak.
The first period saw Plymouth take the lead quick and early as senior Brooke Maggy (Los Angeles CA) slipped the puck by the goalie through the crease to Amber Thomas (Cornwall Ont.) who sent the puck into the open net before the NEC’s goalie could react giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead five minutes into the first period. Plymouth remained quiet despite the fact they took 15 more shots and had one power play during the rest of the period.
The second period started as the first had ended, with Plymouth imposing their attacking superiority over the Pilgrims, allowing them to control the game within the Pilgrim’s third. The second period also saw the most penalties for either team during the game as New England accrued 6 minutes from three penalties and Plymouth accumulated 8 minutes from 4 penalties. On the Plymouth’s third penalty, that’s when NEC struck taking advantage of the power play and scored the game-tying goal. Despite Plymouth’s high-powered offense taking another 10 shots, they were still plagued by their inability to finish around the net.
The third period saw Plymouth kick their offense into a whole different gear as the team came out shooting trying to put the game in their favor and avoid another overtime game. Every bit of the Panthers team became stifling for the Pilgrims as they held New England to just two shots in all the third period. Plymouth’s offense took an absurd 24 shots in the third period, the most all night. Unfortunately, Plymouth was still unable to find the back of the night, so the game moved to overtime where Plymouth was finally able to end the game, behind Junior Alexis Fagan (Burrillville, R.I.) who finish off a tipped cross pass from Junior Caitlin Connor (Bow, N.H.). Plymouth ended the game with a whopping 52 shots and their second straight 50+ shot game proving they are an offense to be feared.
Plymouth moves to 2-3-1 on the season, and 2-1-1 in league play, as they played their second straight overtime game. Plymouth’s next stop will be a conference game away at Southern Maine University on Friday, November 16, starting a 4 p.m.
